Rachel Gaffney-Dawson is a Brisbane-based contemporary visual artist whose highly detailed coloured-pencil drawings are inspired by immersive experiences in nature. Through layered colour, pattern and intuitive composition, her work translates moments of sensory immersion and stillness into semi-abstract landscapes.
Drawing on a long-standing meditation practice, she approaches both nature and art-making as forms of attentive presence. Time spent walking in national parks and coastal environments informs her process: photographs gathered on hikes become the starting point for layered studio compositions developed through coloured pencil and acrylic pen on archival paper.
She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) with Distinction from Queensland University of Technology and has worked in the arts sector for over fifteen years. Most recently, she served as Visual Arts Program Manager at Access Arts, where she led and curated visual arts programs and exhibitions across major Brisbane venues including Brisbane Powerhouse, KPMG, Graydon Gallery and Brisbane Square Library.
Her original works and limited-edition fine art prints are produced using museum-quality archival materials and are held in private collections.
