Held by the world...

Last week a dear friend of mine came to stay. On my green, grassy front lawn I curled up in a ball, gathered my white dress about me and she took my photo. I was thinking about what it means to be held by the world, to be an extension of nature. As an expression of this, I snuggled into the landscape like it was home, my mother, a cocoon, a protective blanket. I once read a poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye, beautifully expressing the idea that there is no separation.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sun on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awake in the morning's hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circling flight.

I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there; I did not die.

I remember advice I once received, to notice the support everywhere in your environment. The earth beneath your feet supporting you as you walk, the chair supporting you as you sit, the mattress supporting you as you sleep. The food you eat, the air you breathe, the water you bathe in supporting your body. The temperature on the planet supporting life.

Looking into my own life this week I began looking for what I feel supported by, and what I feel grateful for. One thing is the rising temperature in Queensland as we move toward the summer months. The air is moist and I feel free in summer dresses. I feel grateful for our neighbours sweet incense blowing through the house in the morning, jasmine scent wafting through the bedroom window in the evening. I'm enjoying the sounds of the cicadas humming and the kookaburras chuckling. I am grateful for pot plants that had shrivelled coming back to life, for invigorating spring storms.

What do you feel grateful for and supported by?
